PESSN Update
As you know Mondays planned PE coordinator meeting was cancelled but we have put a short video together containing all of the information that we were going to go through on the day.
We have also bullet pointed the main areas for your schools to start planning for below.
PE & School Sports Premium Changes
- The PE and School Sport Premium will change from September 2026.
- At present, the details remain unclear, but we wanted to share the latest information available.
- From September 2026, schools are expected to receive between £8,000 and £9,000, which will cover the period until April 2027.
- Schools should have received the government's updated strategy last Thursday or Friday.
- While the update provided some direction, it remained quite vague, so we have been speaking with contacts who are closer to the decision-making process to gain further clarity.
- Current indications suggest that the government is looking to introduce a model that is similar to the previous School Sport Partnership structure.
- A number of funding models are currently being considered, including:
-
- Funding being held centrally by the Youth Sport Trust (YST) and distributed to organisations such as the PE & School Sport Network.
- Funding being allocated directly to chosen organisations, similar to the previous School Sport Partnership model.
- Schools applying for funding each year based on the provision they wish to deliver.
-
- We believe the PE & School Sport Network will form part of the new structure, given our track record as one of the most successful school sport partnerships in the UK and our work supporting schools across Southwark.
What does this mean for my network membership (2026/27)
- We are asking all schools to sign the 2-year Service Level Agreement (SLA).
- This may change slightly in the second year once everything is confirmed and we have a clear picture of the landscape.
- Future changes will depend on the following:
-
- The level of funding available.
- How the government expects that funding to be used.
-
Upcoming Information Sessions
- We will host a Q&A session for all Southwark Headteachers during the third week of September.
- The session will be delivered alongside Alan Watkinson, who is a consultant for the Youth Sport Trust and well placed to answer questions regarding the new funding arrangements.
- Once further information becomes available, we will also hold a Q&A session for PE Leads in October/November, when we expect the picture to be much clearer.
Barclays Girls Football Equal Access Survey
Thank you to those schools that completed this year’s equal access survey.
- 51 Primary schools completed the survey.
- 14 Secondary schools completed the survey.
- 71% of all schools in Southwark completed the survey.
While this is a positive response on the surface, we remain cautious, as there are still significant gaps in the data being submitted by schools, meaning the national figures may not yet provide a fully accurate picture.
Once the national data has been published, we will contact any schools that would benefit from additional support in achieving equal access to girls' football within their provision.
In the meantime, we encourage schools to visit the Girls' Football website to access a range of resources and guidance to help strengthen their current offer and support the delivery of equal access.

NEW Competition Calendar
This was sent out on Monday. Please check your mailboxes for an email from George with all the information you need.
PESSN Website Access
Access to the website will end from next Friday as we prepare for the new academic year.
New website login details and passwords will be issued to all schools in September.
If you will no longer be leading PE from September, please let us know as soon as possible and provide the contact details of the colleague who will be taking over responsibility for the subject. This will ensure they receive all future communications and access to Network resources.
